Hawi's trusted neighborhood market since 1985.

A Hawi tradition baked with intention

Nakahara Grocery Store has been a quiet cornerstone of the Hamakua Coast for over four decades. What started as a small family market has grown into Hawi's most beloved destination for fresh breads, quality groceries, and the kind of personal service that only comes from knowing your neighbors by name.

Every loaf we bake begins before dawn. Our sourdough, mantuan bread, and specialty pastries are crafted in-house using time-honored techniques — no shortcuts, no preservatives, just flour, water, salt, and patience. The result is bread with character: crusty on the outside, tender on the inside, and unmistakably fresh.

The dough is mixed before you wake up

Our bakers arrive in the quiet hours before dawn. Every loaf goes through a slow fermentation — 18 to 24 hours — so the flavor develops naturally and the crust cracks with the perfect sound when you break it open.

We don't rush it. We don't use improvers. What you get is bread made the way it should be: with time, attention, and ingredients you can actually pronounce. By the time we open our doors, the smell of fresh bread is already filling the shop.
